Sending Christmas Cheer

IMG_2991.JPG

I’m so happy to be participating in Papertrey Ink’s monthly blog hop for November.  I love this challenge because you get to create a card inspired by a gorgeous photo they choose.  Here is this month’s inspiration:

{source: goodhousekeeping.com}

I love all the red and white.  I’ve been using that color combo a lot on my cards this month.  That blue ribbon is so pretty too, so I decided to combine all the colors for my card along with a little sprig of green.

I used the peppermint circle from the Candy Cane Christmas stamp set and created a masked line of the candies all the way across a white notecard using Pure Poppy ink.  This is really easy to do using a 1 3/4″ punch and some masking paper.  Just stamp, cover the first stamp with the mask, stamp again offsetting the image, remove the mask and cover the second image, stamp, and so on…..

IMG_2993.JPG

IMG_2986

I added the circle tag from Holiday Photo Finishers (an older set) stamped on some Spring Rain cardstock and tucked in some holly from the Spruce & Sprigs set.  Light blue enamel dots helped to continue the blue.

IMG_2988

Those peppermint candies are so festive and the masking keeps this card clean and simple.  Thanks so much for joining me today.  Supplies used on my project are linked below.  Just click on the logo below each product for the shop

Clean & Simple Holiday

IMG_2912

Hi Everyone!

Last week was the latest Online Card Classes clean and simple class called Clean & Simple Holiday.  It was a super busy week, so I was only able to complete one project, but there are a lot of great ideas that I’m definitely going to refer back to.

I was inspired by Shari’s colored pencil technique on the back of vellum, so I used a background stamp from Hero Arts and heat embossed it in white for the technique.

Shari has a really nice clean and layered style, so I layered the sentiments with foam tape leaving lots of white space.

I love the way this turned out.  A really great way to use background stamps you have in your stash.  Thanks for joining me today!

CAS Card using Secondary Colors

As card makers, color is a key component in creating “pleasing to the eye” projects.  I’ll admit that I struggle a lot with choosing the right colors and venturing out of my comfort zone.  I recently finished the Online Card Class: Introduction to Color Theory  and came away with so much  in the way of choosing color and understanding the color wheel that I encourage you to check it out.

The following post contains affiliate links which means if you click on a product link, and make a purchase, I may receive a small commission at no cost to you.  My full disclosure policy can be found HERE.)

On day one, we learned the basics of the color wheel and created our own.  For mine, I used a 1.5″ punch to create my wheel along with various colors of card stock.  I punched a second set of circles so I could move them around and play with color combos.

IMG_2168.JPG

Each day had a “homework assignment” and for Day 1, I chose to create a project using the secondary colors from the color wheel–orange, green and violet.

IMG_2175.JPG

I kept it CAS by just stamping a few flowers along the edge of a frame I made using a circle die from My Favorite Things.  The flowers are from the Papertrey Ink set, Doodlie-Do.

IMG_2179

I blended some Distress Oxide ink in shaded lilac on the outside of a white note card and placed the stamped frame over it.

IMG_2181

For the center of the frame, I heat embossed the sentiment from the Spellbinders Peony Cool Vibes set using Versafine Onyx ink and clear embossing powder onto some thick vellum.  I added Nuvo drops in coordinating colors for a finishing touch.

IMG_2183

This class has taught me so much about color choices–I can’t wait to try more projects!  Thanks for joining me today.

I’m Here For You

It’s time for another My Favorite Things Card Design Superstar contest and I’m entering my project into the “Clean and Simple Genius” category.  Their prizes are a cardmaker’s dream–a $250 shopping spree to the shop!

I love CAS cards, but I’m telling you, they are not as easy to do as they look.  This one took me quite awhile because I was trying to get everything clustered together perfectly.  Not too squeezed together, yet not too far away.  A teeny 1/2 millimeter makes all the difference in the look.

The following post contains affiliate links which means if you click on a product link, and make a purchase, I may receive a small commission at no cost to you.  My full disclosure policy can be found HERE.)

I started off with a circle frame I made from two Inside Out Stitched Circles Stax and Lemon Chiffon cardstock.

IMG_1817

I framed the circle over two vases I die cut from the Kitschy Kitchen stamp set and placed in the corner of a white notecard with foam tape.  I used Blu Rasberry and Orange Fizz to stamp the vases.  I love this color combo with the yellow frame.

IMG_1819

After trimming off the excess part of the frame, I stamped a sentiment from the Essential Sentiments stamp set and heat embossed it in white on Gravel Gray cardstock.  I made it into a strip and tucked it under the blue vase.  I scattered a few Ripe Raspberry hearts I stamped using the Boss Babe stamp set.

IMG_1827

For CAS cards, I like to have all the elements equal an uneven number.  In this case, if you look, there are seven elements on this card including the hearts and sentiment strip.  Everything is tucked close and kind of intertwining which makes it “pleasing to the eye” according to the rules of design.  I think it’s so interesting how your eye “likes” a certain look.  It’s true though, I think if I added an extra heart, it might not look quite right.

There’s still time to join in this fun challenge.  They have 2 other categories too–Coloring and Specialty cards.  Thanks so much for joining me today–have a great weekend!

CutCardstock Design Team Project: Clean and Simple Wedding Wishes

Wedding season is still going strong and you can never have too many cards in your stash for these monumental events.  All you need is a couple of great “go-to” stamps and a simple design to create a special keepsake for the happy couple.

For this project, first featured on the CutCardstock blog, I started off with a notecard I made using Cougar White Smooth 100# cardstock.  I wanted to create a couple of light layers on the front of my card, so I first spread some glass bead paste (kind of like texture paste) over a heart stencil for the first layer.

IMG_1477

When it dries, it gives this sheer, raised, iridescent look that’s so pretty for a wedding card.

IMG_1461

For my second layer, I die cut some hearts in Cougar White and blended some light blue ink over the tops.  This gives a little bit of a contrast, but still keeps everything light and airy.

IMG_1453

I adhered the hearts over the top of the stenciled hearts and added a “Mr. & Mrs.” die cut I cut from Currency Cover Silver cardstock over the top.

IMG_1469.JPG

To decorate the inside, I stamped this pretty wooden stamp from Penny Black using my Stamp-A-Ma-Jig.

IMG_1459

I left the bride and groom without color, but added a little color to the flowers using my gelatos and some water.  I added a sentiment above in blue ink.

This clean and simple card would be perfect with a foil-lined envelope for an extra special touch.

CutCardstock Design Team Project: Clean and Simple Encouragement

Clean and simple will always be my favorite when it comes to card making.  I love to start with a crisp, white backdrop, then take it from there with a cute and colorful focal point.  For today’s project, that I first featured on the CutCardstock blog, I started with my favorite basic white card stock from the Cut Cardstock shop–Cougar White Super Smooth 100lb, and added some adorable fortune cookie stamps for a happy encouragement card.

To give my little cookies a place to rest, I brushed some light blue watercolor over the center of my note card.  This heavier card stock takes watercolor paints really well.  I set the card aside to dry for a bit and got to work on my stamping.

IMG_1172

After stamping 3 cookies onto some more Cougar White, I colored them with Copics in bright, cheery colors.  This card stock is great with Copics too!

IMG_1174

IMG_1163

The stamps came with a matching die, so I cut each one out and placed them on the front of the card over the watercolored area.

IMG_1176

I adhered 2 of them flat with tape runner, then popped the middle one up with foam squares for interest.

Those cookies just “pop” against the crisp white!

Kat Scrappiness Design Team Project: Crafting Happiness

For those of us who craft, the statement on this card rings true.  The happy calm we feel when stepping into our craft space is like no other!  Even if it’s just for fifteen minutes or so :).  Today’s project uses the recently released Crafters Essentials 2 die set along with Echo Park’s Eat. Sleep. Craft. stamp set.

IMG_0938

The big background panel in the set is perfect for the graphic style sentiment stamps.  I arranged a couple of the sentiments utilizing the chevron arrows to create the movement of “eat, sleep, craft, repeat”.  I really like the sunburst die included in the set.  It’s perfect for cute little focal points like the sewing machine.  Notice the design “triangle” I made with the stamps and the sunburst.  This is a design principle I love using for CAS cards.

IMG_0940

I stamped, colored and cut out the little sewing machine adding a little Spectrum Noir clear sparkle pen for fun.  I actually have a fun, flowered sewing machine in my craft area that I need to use more.  Threading that bobbin just throws me off every time, LOL!  Someday…….:).

IMG_0941

I adhered the sewing machine to the sunburst with some foam tape and the entire panel was adhered to a lavender notecard with more foam tape.

Craft2

Craft3

Here’s another card I made with the die set using the big fish tail banner.  I love how wide the banner is.  Perfect for block-style sentiments.  This sentiment is from the same Echo Park set I used in the previous card.  I die cut 2 banners in Crafter’s Companion Silver Spotlight Shimmering Cardstock to back the main banner.  A few drops of Liquid Mercury Nuvo Crystal Drops highlight the sentiment.
